I really like Jodi Picoult – I like the way she writes and I like the way she handles difficult subjects. Also like Louise Erdrich. And I’m a total mystery junkie. I’m enjoying reading about other favorite authors. The annotated bibliography, while difficult to put together, was very helpful. Travel books (think Bill Bryson) are fascinating.
I always go a bit nuts when people say “who’s your favorite author?” Because there are so many!
Dorothy L. Sayers, particularly the Wimsey-Vane mysteries. Her working out of the relationship between the two, in the midst of crime-solving, is a joy to behold. And all of the Wimsey books are as much comedies of manners as they are detective novels. She reminds me an awful lot of Jane Austen, actually.
Then there’s Dante, who wrote the most erotic line in all literature: quel giorno più non vi leggemmo avante (that day we read no further) and mapped Heaven for us.
Shakespeare, a complete volume of whose works would be all I’d need on a desert island.
Sarah Waters brilliantly evokes Victorian England for me, and, in Affinity, wrote one of the creepiest passages I’ve ever read.
Nikos Kazantzakis, who had the nerve to write a sequel to the Odyssey and succeeded, and who is the author of another favorite quotation of mine: “I said to the almond tree: ‘Speak to me of God.’ And the almond tree blossomed.”
Obviously, I could go on and on, but I’ll spare you!
